ABSTRACT This talk will present research and development work pertaining to a couple of NSF EPCoR‐funded projects aimed at improving Nevada’s cyberinfrastructure for scientific research and education. The need for computing infrastructure enhancements in Nevada will be discussed and the challenges associated with creating two key components of the cyberinfrastructure system, the network of environmental monitoring stations (NevCAN) and the Nevada Research Data Center (NRDC), will be examined. Architectural details will be presented, and related computer science and engineering research activities will be described. Largely, these activities pertain to the areas of software engineering, data engineering, computer networks, and database systems. Aspects of interdisciplinary collaboration involving environmental scientists, hydrologists, renewable energy researchers, and computer scientists will also be discussed.
BIO Sergiu Dascalu is a Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), USA. He received a Master’s degree in Automated Control from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Romania and a PhD in Computer Science from Dalhousie University, Canada. His main research interests are in software engineering and human-computer interaction, in particular in software for scientific research, simulation environments, and interaction design. Sergiu is the Director of the Software Engineering Laboratory at UNR and is the leader of the Nevada cyberinfrastructure team in a 5-year $24-million NSF EPSCoR project aimed at improving the understanding of the linkages among solar energy production, water consumption, and their effects on the environment. He has served as investigator or co-investigator on several other projects funded by US federal agencies such as NSF, NASA, and ONR.
